Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity have joined together to create Thrivent Builds, a 4 year, $125 million dollar program designed to provide help to people who lack sufficient housing.

Our church has been asked to partner with the other 14 Lutheran congregations in DeKalb County to assist with a local Thrivent Builds project.   I made the presentation to our church council and they voted in full support of this mission.  We are going to assist Thrivent and Habitat for Humanity build a home in Kingston for a local family.

Mike & Michelle currently live in DeKalb and have a two year old daughter.  As the partner family, they will be assisting with the build every step of the way, and when finished, they will be responsible for the mortgage that results from the project.

The mission has two components: financial assistance and volunteer laborers.

I am very grateful that the church council has generously elected to fund the financial commitment of $1,200 with money that a former member, the late Orva Engelsvold, left to our church in her will.

The second component is the volunteer labor.  The build is expected to take approximately 16 weeks.  The excavating and concrete work should begin in May, weather permitting.  Our church has been teamed with one of the other Lutheran churches to provide construction labor on two Saturdays; one in July and one in September.  In addition, we will provide the lunch for the Saturday build in September.

Julie Woodward and I will be coordinating efforts.  Please prayerfully consider participating in the Thrivent Builds project and watch for more news.  If you have questions, please contact me or Julie.
