The mission of First Evangelical Lutheran Church shall be to put Christ first in all things.

Dear Friends:

Last month I wrote about the first of the four core values of the North American Lutheran Church, reflecting on what it means to be Christ-Centered. My letter to you this month is on the second of these four essential aspects of our identity: “Mission-Driven”.

To be mission driven is crucial for the health and well-being of any church. In fact, it is crucial for any organization. Almost all corporations, institutions, and other organized ventures have mission statements, which serve not only to tell the public about the organization, but also to focus the efforts of the organization itself, so that it will be efficient and productive. This is certainly also true for our congregation and our church body. We are driven - we are energized and motivated - by our mission. Churches that neglect this will be driven by other, less inspiring motivations. But churches that remember this will find great joy and fulfillment in it.

Since it is so important to be driven by our mission, it is imperative that we know what that mission is.  It can’t be just any mission! Neither can it be self-chosen or self-invented.  It must be the mission that God gives us. It can be expressed in various ways: one is our congregational mission statement, “First Lutheran Church, Putting Christ First.” Our mission - the mission that drives us - is to worship God in Jesus Christ, and to proclaim Jesus Christ to all the world. This is the mission our Lord gave us in Matthew 28:18-20, known as the “Great Commission”.
And as one person has put it: “Our mission is the Great Commission!”

Sincerely in Christ,

Pastor Carl L.M. Rasmussen
