These sure are strange times. For over three months, the whole country has been living in various forms of “lock down” because of a threatening virus. The effect on congregations has been enormous. The very meaning of “congregation” is to congregate – to gather, together! So, this has struck near the root of who we are as a church.

Then, right in the midst of this unprecedented situation – when, perhaps, it was just starting to ease (although that in itself might be debated) – there arose a national crisis that has put people at great odds with one another, producing tension, fear, uncertainty, and great, widespread anxiety.

Much conflict has been generated by both of these highly disturbing situations. How are we Christians to respond? Can we find a role that will be positive and healing? “Blessed are the peacemakers,” Jesus said. But how might we go about that? In a recent sermon title, I asked the question, “What Shall We Say?” Christians believe words are of crucial importance. What words should we speak? My advice is to let Jesus give you your words. Let not the world tell you what to say, nor what not to say. Let only Jesus “put words in your mouth”. Here’s a great place to start: “Let us love one another.”

Sincerely in Christ,

Pastor Carl L.M. Rasmussen

P.S. I wish to take this opportunity to express my thanks, and the thanks of the whole congregation, to Steve May, who has served faithfully and well as our Congregation President for almost a year. Steve has now stepped down from that position, due to ongoing health concerns. We fully appreciate and respect his decision. The council will keep you posted on its efforts to fill this important office.
